Counselling and therapy in Wood Green

Welcome and thank you for taking the time to look at my website. My name is Helena and I am a BACP registered person centred humanistic counsellor working in Haringey, North London. As your therapist I aim to provide you with the opportunity to undertake counselling in a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment. I hope that my website provides you with all the information that you need to make an informed decision about starting therapy but I do welcome any extra questions or queries that you might have either by telephone or email.

WHY COUNSELLING?

There could be many varied and complex reasons that have led you to find out more about the support that counselling could offer you. You may find that friends and family are just too close to be able to express difficult thoughts and feelings and that you need to talk to a professionally-trained person to gain a different perspective.

Maybe something specific has happened that is difficult for you to cope with such as a bereavement, relationship break up, illness or work related stress. You might have a sense that something is not quite right. You may feel that perhaps something needs to change in your life but you may not have an idea what that is. You could be at a point where you are not sure what you need to do next. You may be feeling that it is all too difficult to cope with by yourself. Counselling could provide you with the help and support you need in order to identify and work on what it is that is going on for you at this time. There are many motivations for the thoughts and feelings that have prompted you to think about coming to therapy at this time including:

WHAT CAN I HELP YOU WITH?

Issues that we might work on could include:

• addictions • anger management • anxiety • assertiveness • bereavement • cancer • chronic illness • coping with a crisis • cultural issues • depression • emotional eating • health related issues • identity issues • lack of confidence • loneliness • loss • low self-esteem • menopause • men's issues • personal development • redundancy • relationships • sexuality • spirituality • stress • weight management • women's issues • work related issues

HOW WILL IT WORK?

As your counsellor I aim to provide you with a supportive setting to allow you to explore and make some sense of your thoughts, feelings and behaviour about the issues that you have. We will meet regularly, usually once a week and may decide to work on an open-ended basis or for an agreed time period. Either way, during our work together you may want to spend some time exploring your responses to events that are currently happening. Perhaps you might take some time to reflect on past events, experiences and relationships and how they are influencing you in the here and now. You will be able to do so within a non judgemental setting where you are safe to express strong emotions and feelings with my support as your therapist. By working from your perspective regardless of your race, religion or belief, gender, relationship status or sexual orientation we will be working together in an environment that will allow you feel secure in sharing the concerns that have brought you to therapy.

As our work progresses you may gain some new insights and be able to find more helpful ways of coping with your problems and issues. You have the opportunity to consider what options are open to you and decide upon any changes you may wish to make to enhance your life and live it more fully.

FREE INITIAL CONSULTATION

There is no charge for our first meeting which can be face to face or online. This assessment session will give us both the opportunity to decide if we wish to work together. We will discuss a bit about your history and experiences, what has brought you to counselling, and what you are hoping to achieve from coming to therapy. In turn I will explain a bit about me and the way in which I would be working with you as your counsellor including how we will be reviewing your progress as we work together. We will also discuss the boundaries of our counselling relationship and practical issues such as timings, fees and holiday and cancellation arrangements.

By the end of this opening session, I aim to have answered all of your questions and queries so that you have a good understanding of the counselling process and how it will work for you. At the point where we decide that we would like to work together we would then set up a time and date to begin your ongoing sessions.
