Helena Samuels BA(Hons) PGCE MA MBACP
I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and work mainly from a person centred perspective. However I believe it is important to be aware of your needs as a client and so I take broadly pluralistic approach in the way that will be working with you. This means that if it is relevant then I will draw on ideas and concepts from other counselling approaches to inform our work together. There is much research showing that it is the quality of the relationship between client and counsellor which most affects the effectiveness of counselling. With this in mind we will work collaboratively to help you fulfil your full potential in whatever way is appropriate to you.
I have been listening to clients in one form or another for over 25 years beginning as a volunteer befriender while developing my career in education. After leaving teaching I spent seven years working counselling groups of people who have emotional eating issues and addictive behaviour around food. My early experience as a counsellor was with a general counselling service run by a Haringey based local charity and followed by working with clients in a local Category B men’s prison. I gained further experience working with clients both in an Inner London bereavement agency and in North London addiction counselling service
I have also been fortunate to make good use of my teaching background within the sphere of counselling education. I have taught counselling courses at various levels including Introduction to Counselling, Level 3 Certificate in Counselling Skills and the professional level Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at two of London's leading Adult Education colleges.
I hold the CPCAB Certificate in Counselling Skills, the BACP Accredited Diploma in Counselling and a Foundation Degree in Counselling (Middlesex University). As a member of the BACP I adhere to their Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy.
